How the numbers are worked out
The arithmetic
Everything goes through metres per second. A mile is 1,609.344 m, a half marathon 21.0975 km and a marathon 42.195 km, so the finish times are exact for the distance. A GPS watch usually reads a little long on race day, which is worth knowing when the splits don't match.
